About the Artist
Melissa Miller Nece is regarded as one of the foremost colored pencil artists in the country. She has been teaching colored pencil, drawing, and oil and acrylic painting at the Dunedin Fine Art Center since 1990.

Zoom Demo: Painting with Dyes on Silk with Elizabeth Mitchell
The Demo
I am a self taught artist, a ‘primitive” in a sophisticated world. My art work is a lyrical, symbolic narrative. Spontaneity, freedom and richness of color are characteristic of my work. They are enhanced by the nature of silk - its luster and receptivity to the dyes - and by the immediacy of the silk painting technique. This evening I will be demonstrating how I paint with dyes on silk.

About the Artist
Born and educated in New Zealand, Elizabeth traveled the world, becoming a US citizen in 1999. A self taught artist, her art career began with a successful exhibition of silk paintings in New Zealand, a visit to the Altos De Chavon Art Colony in the Dominican Republic, and a life as a self supporting artist. After twenty years, Elizabeth retired from the Art Show Circuit to focus on painting, (silk paintings available at Baisden Gallery Tampa, and Clay Paper Gallery in Dunedin), and teaching her “happy medium” at her studio.

Bay Area Art Exhibit Virtual Reception and Awards Presentation
Celebrate the Bay Area Art Exhibit Awards. Juror Lynn Whitelaw will describe how he chose the exhibit and selected each of the awards, and we will also hear from each of the award winners, describing how they created each work of art. The reception will be on Zoom and streaming live on TRA’s Facebook page. Directions for Zoom and FB Live here.
The Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84748011800
As part of the celebration of the 13th Annual Bay Area Art Exhibit and its award, TRA will be conducting a drawing for a chance to waive your member level entry fees in TRA’s exhibits from Mask-erade to June 2021, excluding Bay Area 14 and the 2021 Rembrandt. Must be a member to be eligible to participate in drawing. Deadline to enter the giveaway is midnight of July 11th. You do not have to present at the meeting to win. We will notify the winner via email after the reception.
Donations are not required to enter, but a suggested donation would be $20, with a donation of $100 providing 6 entries. The drawing will occur during the Bay Area Awards Reception on July 12 from 4PM to 6 PM.
As you know, Covid-19 has impacted the arts community greatly with the need for social distancing and closing down of events. TRA was no exception to this. While we own our building, TRA still has expenses to operate the facility, including insurance, utilities, landscaping, etc. In lieu programming at our center, we have started offering virtual opportunities for exhibiting and classes to our artists via Zoom. But the financial impact was still strong on our health as an organization as it relies on classes and workshops as a primary source of revenue.
We need your help and donations. Please consider a suggested donation of $20 as apart of this mini-fundraiser so that we may continue to provide these opportunities to our beloved artists. Thank you and good luck!

      Kelly Quinn Demo
With each artwork I create, I spend nearly as much time in the field as I do putting acrylic to canvas. Whether it be hiking, diving or photography trips, it is my mission to capture and tell the stories of nature for our commeunity to connect more deply with the environment that we depend on for survival, and so we may feel inspired to protect and restore our home for the next generation.
In this demo, we will be playing with acrylics on canvas; specifically, we will learn how to develop a realistic marine gradient using just four colors and paying special attention to those lovely light rays that add so much depth to a marine artwork! I have included an example of a Humpback Whale family for you to see how you can add a subject over the light rays for a truly magical effect. All you will need is size 6 flat brush and a size 2 round brush to create this entire piece on an 8"x10" canvas. The colors I recommend include Turquoise, Phthalo Blue, Teal, and Titanium White. My preferred brand is Golden Acrylics, but feel free to use any brand you have on hand! I can't wait to paint with you! So plan on painting along!

Zoom Workshop: Book Binding Your Own Sketchbook with Cynthia Lizardi
Zoom Workshop: Book Binding Your Own Sketchbook with Cynthia Lizardi
About the Instructor:
Cynthia is an acrylic painter with a Bachelor’s in Art Studio from the University of South Florida. She adores books and started to make books that would fit her needs as an artist. Cynthia creates books using varying methods and materials, usually by up-cycling leftover drawing paper, sketchpad backs, cereal boxes and printed t-shirts.
About the Workshop:
Do you love handmade books? Always wanted know how to make one that matches your style or needs? In this workshop, Cynthia will be show you how to hand bind a blank journal or sketchbook using the Coptic stitch method. Coptic stitch is a bookbinding method dating back to the Early Christians in Egypt, the Copts, used from the 2nd Century AD to the 11th Century AD. Coptic stitch binding, in the modern usage, leaves the spine exposed and allows the pages to lay flat when the book is opened.
We will go over making the covers using book board covered with decorative paper or fabric. It's a fine way to use leftover sketchbook paper and your favorite t-shirt! Nothing too high tech here: just glue, needle, thread and a couple other things,. We will create a journal (or sketchbook) you're sure to love using things you may already have in your studio.
Cost
$25 for TRA Members, $40 for Non-Members

Gina has been creating Lino and Woodblock prints for about 3 years, finding much of her inspiration from observing and illustrating nature and the world around her. Her own backyard is where she began her Woodland Creatures series. Most of her recent work and Lino prints center on the local wildlife and her mischievous and funny pets. https://www.starlustudio.com
Gina Stark is a native of Tampa, Florida and a formally trained artist who majored in fine arts in college. She believes that continued work and a curious mind is just as good a teacher. She is always taking classes in whatever she finds interesting, and highly recommends it!
She has had an "On again-Off again" love affair with portraiture. She mostly paints and draws children when she does make portraits, because she thinks that children are beautiful and perfect in every way.

Mini-Workshop: Negative Watercolor Painting with Linda Wokoum
“Negative Painting” English Hawthorn
November 12, 2019
Negative painting is one of the essential watercolor techniques for any painter. It leverages the unique properties of watercolor to create loose, luminous washes that can be developed, through negative painting, into representational or abstract subjects. In this class, students will have the opportunity to practice negative painting as well as develop paintings using the technique.
The class demo will be based on a Hawthorn tree branch reference, but students are encouraged to use their own photo reference if preferred.  Our emphasis will be on negative painting which can be used with any subject matter.  Our goal is to create a loose, abstract, wet into wet initial wash that we will develop into a representational image.  If you are new to wet-into–wet painting, choose photos with a combination of simple shapes and a few detailed areas.   All watercolor skill levels are welcome.
Supply List
Please bring any good quality, cold pressed watercolor paper, either 140 or 300lb. Draw or transfer your image onto one or two half sheets of watercolor paper. (Two if you want additional color experiments). Also, bring several sheets of “practice” watercolor paper, ¼ sheet or smaller. I will do my best to help you make use of the supplies that you already have on hand, so please bring whatever paints and brushes you normally use in your watercolor practice. Don’t forget water containers, spray bottle and paper towels and a variety of round and large flat brushes. In addition, you may want to consider adding the following supplies:
Paper:
· 2 or more ¼ or ½ sheets cold pressed watercolor paper. To save time in class, please draw/trace your image onto both sheets.
· Several small sheets of practice watercolor paper. (1/4 sheet or smaller) Backs of “failed” paintings are a good choice. Just be sure that your “practice” paper is the same quality that you normally use for painting.
Paint:
Do not feel like you need to purchase every color. Try to come close with the paints that you already own. Once you’ve experimented, you can decide if you want to add pigments to your collection.
· Brown/Orange: Quinacridone Sienna by Daniel Smith is beautiful. Burnt Sienna by Mission is excellent. Burnt Sienna by most manufacturers will work and is a great workhorse color.
· Blues: Transparent blues with a slightly green undertone. Antwerp blue, Prussian blue, Cyan, Berlin blue are all good choices.
· Turquoise: Cobalt Turquoise Light, Cerulean, Cobalt Teal, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise are all good
· Red: A warm red such as Scarlet Lake or Quinacridone Coral and a cool red such as Alizarin Crimson, or Permanent Rose
· Magenta or Pink: Quinacridone Magenta, Quin Lilac or Quin Pink are good. Opera, Fuschia, or rose will also work
· Yellow: Transparent warm yellows such as New Gamboge (any manufacturer except Winsor Newton), Carr Yellow by American Journey, Golden Yellow by Maimeri Blu or Cadmium Yellow Orange. I also love Aussie Red Gold by Daniel Smith for granulating
Masking fluid – Optional. I recommend Pebeo
