Zoom Workshop: Book Binding Your Own Sketchbook with Cynthia Lizardi

Zoom Workshop: Book Binding Your Own Sketchbook with Cynthia Lizardi

About the Instructor:

Cynthia is an acrylic painter with a Bachelor’s in Art Studio from the University of South Florida. She adores books and started to make books that would fit her needs as an artist. Cynthia creates books using varying methods and materials, usually by up-cycling leftover drawing paper, sketchpad backs, cereal boxes and printed t-shirts.

About the Workshop:

Do you love handmade books? Always wanted know how to make one that matches your style or needs? In this workshop, Cynthia will be show you how to hand bind a blank journal or sketchbook using the Coptic stitch method. Coptic stitch is a bookbinding method dating back to the Early Christians in Egypt, the Copts, used from the 2nd Century AD to the 11th Century AD. Coptic stitch binding, in the modern usage, leaves the spine exposed and allows the pages to lay flat when the book is opened.

We will go over making the covers using book board covered with decorative paper or fabric. It's a fine way to use leftover sketchbook paper and your favorite t-shirt! Nothing too high tech here: just glue, needle, thread and a couple other things,. We will create a journal (or sketchbook) you're sure to love using things you may already have in your studio.

Workshop with Joanna Karpay

Exciting Pastels with Underpainting Workshop

About the Instructor:

Joanna Karpay is a lifelong painter and native Floridian. Much of her work is based on the Florida landscape.  Her passion for nature and its beauty is seen in her work as she interprets familiar landscapes into colorful and bold works of art.

Free Demo:
Thursday, September 13 at 7 PM

About the Workshop:

This workshop will show how to enhance your pastels by using an underpainting to start.  Pastels are a vibrant and beautiful medium that can be used in bold strokes of pure color pigment to achieve exciting, expressive paintings.  The use of an underpainting is a great way o loosen up and make a more interesting and painterly painting. There will be a demonstration and discussion covering the various forms of dry pastels, papers and techniques as well as good planning before starting your painting.  Learning how to handle pastels and layer color is also a key topic.  Individual attention is given as you work on your own painting.  To conclude the day, a "feedback" session is held to review ideas and questions.

Cost
$50 for TRA Members, $65 for Non-Members
