Beth Smedley -- Found Objects Robots
I found altoid tin robots on Pinterest a long time ago and had to try one. I’ve made several over the years. My findings lead me to what personality my robot will take. In this demo I will show the steps I take to flush out a “Happi-mess™” Robot.
About the Artist
Originally from Baltimore, MD, Beth Smedley has lived in Florida since 1974. She was deeply inspired by her Chinese mother who was very creative. Beth has worked professionally as a graphic designer for over 40 years, but has always found time to try a new art or craft. Some of these experiments are: stained glass, basketry, painting of all mediums, including cold wax and oil, jewelry making, paper mache, scultpure, needle felting and drawing. Favorite art type is mixed media, where all of the previous can come into play.
Beth has been involved with the Brandon League of Fine Arts since 2016 and served as president in 2024. She won the strawberry themed art award at the FL Strawberry Festival for 2 years in a row and a Best in Show award in 2020.

Joyce Curvin: Whimsical Paper Mache Animals
Demo Description
Joyce Curvin creates quirky playful animals from paper-mâché and recycled materials. Her Art-Official Pets© start with an armature of upcycled items that might include plastic bottles, old cardboard, paper and wire. The frame is then covered in paper-mâché which is typically painted in bright colors. The piece is completed with other found items – feathers, button eyes, fabrics, and paper - that tell the creatures’ charming stories.
Artist Statement:
Recycling is at the heart of my work. Through a playful fusion of colors, textures, and materials I work to create humorous, engaging characters that evoke a sense of fun and wonder. My goal is to capture an expression, an attitude or moment of joy in every piece.
Each of my Art-Official Pets© starts with an armature of mostly recycled materials that may include plastic bottles, old cardboard, paper and wire. I apply several coats of paper-mâché and texture to the structure followed by a bright palette of color in paint, paper, fabric, and such.
Bio:
Joyce Curvin was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, to a family who believed in reusing, repurposing, and recycling. She studied art and business at Stetson University in DeLand, FL, graduating with a BBA in marketing.
Joyce enjoyed a successful career in visual merchandising and store design for area malls and finer shops…all the while creating her art both on the side and as a part of her visual merchandising projects. She has worked in a variety of mediums including clay, metal, paper, and wood all culminating in her current work in paper-mâché and mixed media.

Artist Statement
An archeologist discovering and claiming my history I draw on historical, fictional and personal references to create densely layered figurative compositions from my ‘dragon’s hoard.’ My eye is drawn to high contrast, colorful patterns that evoke the comfort of my grandmother’s kitchen while she cooked wearing mod dresses indicative of the 60s and 70s. During those years I struggled to feel welcome around my extended family. Early on my parents moved us away and my everyday life was completely counter to those summers running around with cousins. In the aftermath, Grandma’s house became a safe place where my‘blackness’was never a question. My existence and speech patterns were always ENOUGH. For years my style of dress was an act of homage to the safety she provided; scouring thrift shops and markets for objects that made me feel connected to that time/place. Her house was lost to a gang war and with it the furniture, bed coverings, polyester dresses, linoleum patterns and everything I built my early visual language on.
In much the same way that I use to‘collect’using my body as the canvas now I extrapolate from my history to invent a visual language that represents my experience-which simultaneously feels paradoxically fractured and whole. My identity was/is a collaged identity that is reflected in my work. I collect people and objects using them to tell a story I don’t quite know the end of yet.

Anna Jonsdottir Workshop: Stitching on Watercolor Paper
In this workshop, Ana will show how traditional embroidery stitches can lay the foundation for creative embroidery and art textile. She will demonstrate how to stretch and manipulate stitches to incorporate stitch onto surfaces to express texture and feelings. She invites you to enjoy playing with threads, without any preconceived project or application in mind. Be spontaneous with your stitch choices and color scheme. Open your mind to explore using threads in your work. Merging art with our concept of thet raditional trade of hand embroidery.
Bio: Anna Jonsdottir was born in Denmark and raised in Iceland. At the age of six she was taught by her Grandma Anna, to thread a needle and followed a pattern. As a teenager, she loved knitting and exploring embroidery techniques, and designing her own patterns. She has a degree in science and had a successful and lucrative career in the European R&D food sector. Anna moved to the United Kingdom in 2011 and met the talented textile artist Kathleen Patterson, who ran a monthly ‘CreativeEmbroidery’ course. She then studied at the Open Collage of Art, in UK. In 2016 Anna was accepted into her first juried art exhibition, ‘TheNew Forest Open Art Exhibition. Following that she received her first commission from an international public relation company. “Finally,”she says, “I had the courage to say out loud, I am an artist.” In 2023, Anna started selling embroidery kits to encourage people to use embroidery to relax in our ever-demanding society. Finding the joy of using the small tool of a needle and a thread to explore the endless possibilities a needle can bring to our life being mending, making, drawing and/or exploring our artistic side. All kits have everything needed, not popping to the shop. Just putting down the phone, opening a box and feeling the joy of using our hands to make!
Artist Statement
I am a textile, mixed media artist manipulating fibers using color and texture that reflects my Icelandic heritage, weather-beaten Northern Artic wilderness mixed with the bright colors of tropical living in the sunny state of Florida. I mainly explore the theme circle of life, connections, the concept of individualism and nature through texture and feel. I usually work in a series of several small works where each piece can stand on its own, but the depth of the work strengthens and shines as more and more pieces are brought together. As with society, compositions are endless! Isn’t us more fulfilling than I? Although we need an I to make us! That’s thebeauty of us as humans, that’s the fundamental of society.

About the Workshop:
This 6 hour workshop will introduce the fabulous world of Scratchboarding. Teaching various techniques and utilizing a range of different tools to bring images to life. The first 30 mins of the workshop is spent learning different scratchboard tools which can be used for etching. A practice board will be supplied to each student to allow each to be experienced together with individual techniques which are used in creating different effects such as Fur, Stippling, Cross Hatching, etc. During the remaining time in class, an instructor provided image is transferred to a 5x7 Ampersand Scratchbord, this permits the instructor to give step by step instruction to the students, and ensures each student has an equal allocation of the instructors time. At the end of the session there should be an understanding of the basic techniques required to complete a scratchboard.

About the Artist:
In 2013, Gyasi Ottley graduated from the Art Institute of Washington, armed with a portfolio that seamlessly blended animation shorts with traditional masterpieces. His journey into animation began in college, a stark contrast to his early interest in the art form from a young age. Even as a child, Gyasi was drawn to drawing and cartoons, nurturing a latent passion for animation.
It wasn't until college that he delved into animation practice, sparked by his exposure to creators on newgrounds.com who were crafting animations using Adobe Flash. His first animation class in college served as the catalyst, propelling him into the world of animation.
A pivotal juncture arrived when his mother catalyzed his exploration of abstract art. Overcoming a creative impasse while designing a pair of jeans, Gyasi transitioned into the realm of abstraction under his mother's guidance. This newfound direction converged with his fascination for the abstract works born from a 2D design class, catalyzing a transformation that would define his distinctive style

Dr. Merritt Shank from Eagle Fine Arts: Important Considerations for Artists After Project Completion
Abstract:
Most artists are called artists because they know how to produce art. They often go through school and training regarding different mediums and approaches and spend years perfecting their own style. However, part of the art world that artists are often not schooled in is what to do with their art once they have completed it. In this demonstration, Dr. Shank will go over the post-production side of the business. This includes how to approach your work and what to consider for different types of art to accurately capture your work and maximize its potential regarding accurate reproduction and making a profit while you are alive.
Supply List: Students only need a notepad and writing utensil.
From the Presenter:
My name is Dr. Merritt Schenk. I am part owner and operator at Eagle Fine Arts in Tampa Florida. I was brought into the business in 2023 by owner Marshall Cott because of my background in film, art, and behavior analysis. I have degrees from the University of Kansas, the University of the Pacific, and the University of South Florida. Our business focus lies in the field of Fine-Art Replication. Therefore, my presentations will be focused on providing artists with a better understanding of important aspects regarding reproducing their work to reach a broader audience. Born and raised on a farm in Kansas, I moved to Florida to finish my degree, and I loved it here too much to leave. All that said, I’m still a Kansas kid at heart.

Keven Grass Workshop: Structural Figure Drawing
About the Workshop:
The human figure is a particularly difficult drawing subject for several reasons: 1) there is a strong tendency to draw what is expected rather than what is actually present, 2) the figure is very complex, making the characteristics of the forms and their relationships to one another difficult to understand, and 3) the drawing process can be very frustrating when too many variables are addressed at one time. The best way to overcome these problems is to conceive of the figure as a series of simpler geometric forms. A simplified interpretation of the figure makes it easier to develop accurate proportional relationships, deal with foreshortening, and accurately articulate the major elements. Values are also easier to develop in blocky figures because lighting may be enhanced with decisions that address changes in plane, allowing for clearer rendering of the details.
This workshop will introduce you to several approaches to simplifying the human figure into a series of geometric forms. Drawings will initially focus on establishing the head, rib cage, and pelvis for each pose. Longer drawings in the second half of the workshop will allow time for development of the limbs and details. A full range of values addressing planar form will be introduced into the longer poses.

Alexis Lavine Demo: Watercolor on Yupo Paper
About the Demo:
Yupo is “paper” made out of 100% plastic, not the usual ingredient for watercolor paper! It presents a host of surprising features and challenges, but when the right mindset and techniques are applied, it can be a marvelous surface for watercolor paintings. Thanks to the convenience of Zoom, Alexis Lavine will demonstrate how she uses Yupo to create her lively and colorful paintings on this unique surface. The demo will be on Zoom.
About the Artist:
Alexis believes in the power of design so strongly that she recently gave up her decades-long devotion to plein air painting to devote herself to studio work, where she could take more time to design her very best paintings! Teaching is one of the most important things she does. She loves to share her passion for art by guiding others to reach their creative goals, and she teaches with enthusiasm, commitment, passion, humor, and kindness. She has taught watercolor for over two decades, from California to the Caribbean. She has seamlessly adapted her classes to the Zoom platform and believes that her online workshops are as good as, and in many ways better, than in person classes. Honored as one of Watercolor Artist Magazine’s “Ones toWatch,” she is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society,Watercolor Honor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and others. Her paintings reside in collections throughout the country and overseas, and they can be found in galleries from the Mid-Atlanticto the Virgin Islands.
