  • The beginning watercolor class focuses on technique, understanding the water/ pigment ratio and how that impacts brush and pigment handling, loosening up, etc.  The class students range from someone who is new to watercolor to those who might have worked with watercolor in the past but need a refresher.  We work on a class project in each class. Every new student  receives Hazel Soan’s “10 Minute Watercolors” to provide them with exercises to do between classes.

For a student's first class, we ask that he/she start  at 5.45 pm for some initial exercises.

This class has open seats.

Cost: $20.00

  • The focus of this class is to build skills, work with different materials, and explore our creativity! The class will be student driven as the kids help decide what content and materials we explore.

My personal goal is to provide students a chance to dive into art outside of the constraints of their normal school art class.

I will keep the class size small - approximately 6-10 students per group. This will allow for students to be able to have a social aspect with the class without losing the chance to gain time and attention with the teacher.

The class will run in four 9-week sessions along with the Hillsborough County Schools calendar.

Michael is also working to develop middle and high school classes on another day of the week. Classes would also be conducted in four 9-week sessions.

He is also available for individual private sessions.

  • 3:00 -4pm (grades K-2)

    4:15 - 5:30pm (grades 3-5)

This class still has open seats.

Cost: Each session will cost $225, and will cover the studio space, the instruction, and the supplies for the entire session. All artwork made by the students will be theirs to keep.

  • is recommended that beginning students start with drawings of relatively simple forms.  Then progress with increasingly challenging subject matter, in preparation for portraiture, figurative works, landscapes, or works from the imagination.

Intermediate and advanced students have the option to either delve into paintings referencing live draped or undraped models or a mirror, for single figure or multi-figurative paintings.  Or using photos of landscapes, pets, family, friends etc., as reference.  Or perhaps works from the imagination, where the light,  also from the imagination,  is perceived as being from a certain fixed direction throughout.

    • For drawing:

      - a Canson XL multimedia, or Strathmore 400 series 18 x 24 drawing pad with drawing board is recommended.

      - Staedler Graphite pencils set should include at least  2H, HB, and 2B pencils. Lastly, a prismacolor brand kneaded eraser.

      For painting:

      - Winsor and  Newton professional artist's oil paints: Titanium White, Burnt Umber, Winsor Red, Yellow Ochre, Winsor Yellow, Ultrmarine Blue, Permanent Green Deep

      - A Liquitex Freestyle palette knife #11.

      - Gamsol painting medium.

      - A white tile can be used as a palette.

Cost: $30 per session.
