Dr. Merritt Shank from Eagle Fine Arts: Important Considerations for Artists After Project Completion
Abstract:
Most artists are called artists because they know how to produce art. They often go through school and training regarding different mediums and approaches and spend years perfecting their own style. However, part of the art world that artists are often not schooled in is what to do with their art once they have completed it. In this demonstration, Dr. Shank will go over the post-production side of the business. This includes how to approach your work and what to consider for different types of art to accurately capture your work and maximize its potential regarding accurate reproduction and making a profit while you are alive.
Supply List: Students only need a notepad and writing utensil.
From the Presenter:
My name is Dr. Merritt Schenk. I am part owner and operator at Eagle Fine Arts in Tampa Florida. I was brought into the business in 2023 by owner Marshall Cott because of my background in film, art, and behavior analysis. I have degrees from the University of Kansas, the University of the Pacific, and the University of South Florida. Our business focus lies in the field of Fine-Art Replication. Therefore, my presentations will be focused on providing artists with a better understanding of important aspects regarding reproducing their work to reach a broader audience. Born and raised on a farm in Kansas, I moved to Florida to finish my degree, and I loved it here too much to leave. All that said, I’m still a Kansas kid at heart.

Alexis Lavine Demo: Watercolor on Yupo Paper
About the Demo:
Yupo is “paper” made out of 100% plastic, not the usual ingredient for watercolor paper! It presents a host of surprising features and challenges, but when the right mindset and techniques are applied, it can be a marvelous surface for watercolor paintings. Thanks to the convenience of Zoom, Alexis Lavine will demonstrate how she uses Yupo to create her lively and colorful paintings on this unique surface. The demo will be on Zoom.
About the Artist:
Alexis believes in the power of design so strongly that she recently gave up her decades-long devotion to plein air painting to devote herself to studio work, where she could take more time to design her very best paintings! Teaching is one of the most important things she does. She loves to share her passion for art by guiding others to reach their creative goals, and she teaches with enthusiasm, commitment, passion, humor, and kindness. She has taught watercolor for over two decades, from California to the Caribbean. She has seamlessly adapted her classes to the Zoom platform and believes that her online workshops are as good as, and in many ways better, than in person classes. Honored as one of Watercolor Artist Magazine’s “Ones toWatch,” she is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society,Watercolor Honor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and others. Her paintings reside in collections throughout the country and overseas, and they can be found in galleries from the Mid-Atlanticto the Virgin Islands.

About the Demo:
From the artist: My painting is grounded in realism, but it goes beyond portraying the physical reality and seeks to communicate the emotional and spiritual beauty of God’s creation. I paint in a straightforward manner in transparent watercolor on paper. The first and foremost secret is to paint with honesty. I set out to paint a truthful representation of the scene I have chosen. I want to communicate the feeling of late afternoon sunlight, or quietly disturbed water I am not trying to do the camera’s job of recording the facts of a place. I am painting the presence and sense of what I felt when I was there. While I paint and sketch on location to drink in the ambiance and become familiar with my subject, the majority of my paintings are done from the thousands of slides and digital images I take and later view while painting back at my studio. I am able to capture the first light of daybreak or some other fleeting effect. My painting is really of my memory of the place-It's color and light.

Lisa Perez Moran Figueroa -- Abstract Nature & Acrylic
Lisa will talk about her artistic process, and explain the freedom she feels using the abstract approach. She will also reflect how focusing on the tranquility of capturing the essence of natural landscapes. As part of her demonstration, she will walk through how she creates a painting.
About the Artist— Lisa Perez Moran Figueroa:
As an artist since childhood, painting with my father, I have been inspired by nature and he introduced me to abstract ideas.
My current paintings tend to lean towards an abstract expressionist style, as I am intrigued by the duality of the mind, its capability of being fluid and limited at the same time. My attraction to abstract art is the based in the freedom of letting go one’s analytical human mind. My paintings demonstrate colors, whips of colors, brushstrokes, palette knife swipes, and various textures, my completed works are left for the observer to use their imagination in seeing something.
I find tremendous peace and freedom of mind and body when creating my works of art and hope when others observe and analyze them, they see and feel that as well. Some of my abstract work can carry familiar images with abstract forms or a natural landscape. I truly enjoy listening to their visual experiences as they walk me through what they see and explain it with such detail. It is satisfying to watch how playful the mind allows itself to be when presented with obscure images. It is a confirmation that my abstract style of painting is being understood as it was meant to be.

Tim Gibbons: Artist Statement
“Art is a reflection of life built upon a foundation of mystery, amusement, exploration, experience and most importantly, serendipity. My drive, as an artist, is to explore and relate on paper, canvas or in 3-D what I assume existence is, not in any religious or spiritual meaning, but rather, in a more earth-bound and scientific view from the micro- to the macro-cosym of the universe. The steady pulse of life, with all its changes and complexities, is in harmony within this chaotic illusion. And, this illusion lives in every line drawn or brush stroke which I put to paper or canvas.
Science and humor go hand and hand in my art. I have strived, and have had some success, at presenting my personal experience in this voyage of earthbound awareness. I continue to attempt to expand my horizons in different medium and hope my images relate to a kindred spirit in humanity.

Luc Boivin -- Painting people with a loose approach Demo
About the Instructor — Luc Boivin:
Luc Boivin is a self-taught painter-illustrator. He’s been drawing since a very young age, inspired by his grand mother’s oil paintings. His curiosity allowed him to progress rapidly in numerous mediums.
In search of spontaneity, he took his first steps in watercolor in 2015. Quickly seduced by this medium which offers immense possibilities, his progress is rapid. In 2016 the magazine Leisure Painter in UK publishes an article about one of his paintings.
In 2020, he’s invited to exhibit a painting at the international exhibition Fabriano in Aquarello in Italy, in the Canadian pavilion.
It’s his relentless hope of seeing his subjects come to life on paper or on canvas that drives him. When he approaches the portrait, his main objective is to translate the emotion of the gaze while maintaining spontaneity through the play of shadows and light without losing himself in the fine details that characterizes photorealism. His creative process goes through visualization, exploration and experimentation without limits or guidelines regardless of the medium or technique used.
Because of his enthusiasm for this medium, his determination and his desire to share his passion, he regularly presents demonstrations and workshops of his technique.
You can see more of his work at www.LucBoivin.art
About the Demo:
This demo will show you how to paint people in watercolor with bright and vibrant colors while saving the white of the paper and focussing on key essential elements without getting lost in every little details. Its all about trying to keep things as simple as possible while working in a way to maximise spontaneity with a touch of looseness and making sure to convey movement and emotion.
There will be a demonstration and discussion to explain my approach which will be the same used by the participants. All questions will be answered during that period.

Statement:
I took a beginner’s watercolor painting class in September of 2015. I was hooked. I have painted almost every day since. I tried many subjects and find portraits the most challenging, yet the most enjoyable to paint.
Much of my private studio time is spent experimenting with the many materials, styles and techniques watercolor painting offers.
My greatest “breakthrough” came after attending Ted Nuttell’s workshops. I created a color schematic of my paint palette and realized I had a vast array of colors, values, and intensities available to me. At that point I was using maybe 10% of my palette’s potential.

Cynthia Lizardi Matt Cutting Demo
Cynthia is an acrylic painter with a Bachelor’s in Art Studio from the University of South Florida. She loves learning new art forms like from making paper to bookbinding. In her undergrad work, she did mixed media watercolor paintings with cartoons embedded in abstracted backgrounds. Many of these pieces were not typical sizes, so, to present them, she had to cut down full mat boards, and calculate them to fit in standard frame sizes.
Cynthia will demonstrate how to measure and cut a mat for your artwork, including breaking down a full sheet for multiple mat sizes. She will go over tips for choosing mats that fit your budget and project, benefits for pre-cuts vs. cutting your own, and some tricks to ensure your finished mat looks as professional as possible.
NOTE: This demo will be LIve in person at the Old Hyde Park Art Center, not on Zoom.

Zoom Demo: Composition with Kathy Durdin-- Not All Who Wander are Lost
The Demo
All too often, we rely on our images or nature to create our composition for us. We don’t spend enough time planning, but want to get started painting or drawing. Then, after hours invested in our work The image we have created doesn’t effectively communicate our vision.
The Composition of our work is what makes our work interesting and complete.. Composition is more than just structure — it includes values, shapes, space, movement, dominance, edges, color, texture, unity, variation, etc. All need to be considered before one starts painting. Otherwise, success is more a happy accident. With planning, we know where we are going and we are intentional about what we are doing.
In her demonstration, Kathy will provide an overview of the elements of composition, with some illustrations.
In the workshop, attendees will use with their own completed paintings, and their own still life set up, to explore the elements of composition. Our objective will be to provide everyone with the tools to enhance their planning in the future and to evaluate their work. We will explore digital applications that help us examine our works. Kathy will share ideas about what to include in a checklist to use to evaluate one’s work both before and after painting. You might even be motivated to rework that prior painting, with much greater success!
